March 2005

Hotel Fun

(3/30/05) We spend lots of time at our hotel, the Barton Creek Resort. Here Evelyn enjoys a bath, courtesy of Jill, while Henry decides he wants to move his bedding to the porch (six stories up) for some fresh air napping.

First Flight

(3/29/05) Evelyn takes her first flight, on our family trip to Austin, Texas. The first leg is Santa Barbara to Phoenix, followed by a Phoenix to Austin flight. She sleeps or enjoys the flight quietly the whole way.

Easter Egg Hunt

(3/27/05) Hunting for eggs in the Transki's yards, followed by a workout on their putting green.

Afternoon with Eden

(3/26/05) Henry and his friend Eden spend the afternoon coloring eggs. Henry creates a new character--his "knight", complete with mighty steed and protective helmet.

Butterfly Beach

(3/25/05) We take advantage of the great weather with a sunset visit to the beach.

Easter Eggs

(3/24/05) Jill and Maxine help Henry color a couple of dozen easter eggs.

Sitting Pretty

(3/23/05) Wow. How fast she's growing up! Today is Evelyn's seven- week birthday. She already smiles, has lots to say, and holds her head up with no problem.

A Day in L.A.

(3/22/05) Jill and I take Dale and Maxine and Evelyn to L.A. for the day. We visit the Body Worlds 2 exhibit at the California Science Museum, have lunch at a trendy restaurant called Ammo, and tour an Arts and Crafts era exhibit at the L.A. Art Museum, where we see E.R. star Maura Tierney in the museum cafe.

Spring Training 2005

(3/17/05) This is the only photo from this year's Spring Training expedition to Phoenix. Pete Wenzel, Mark Mitchell, and I see the Giants play the Mariners and the Padres, play golf at the PGA West Desert Course, hang out at the J Bar, and eat our way through Scottsdale.

Spring Wildflowers in Santa Ynez Valley

(3/13/05) We packed up two cars and drove Figueroa Mountain Road to see the poppies and other wildlflowers. Henry brought his camera and took more pictures than I did.

Asleep

(3/11/05)

Happy Birthday to Me

(3/10/05) My dad and mom were on hand to help me celebrate #43. We had champagne on the porch, at sunset, and then a feast of prime rib, mashed potatoes, and green beans, courtesy of our friend, and chef, Ashley Transki. Dessert was apple tart and ice cream.

Biplane Ride

(3/10/05) I cashed in my Valentines' Day gift certificate for a biplane ride this afternoon. We cruised up the coast and circled the house a few times, watching as Jill and Henry and Mom, Dad, and Evelyn watched and waved from the yard below. Then we flew along the ridgeline, popping over the mountains at San Marcos pass and exploring some remote canyons to the east. Then we flew back across the Santa Ynez Valley, through Gaviota Pass, and back to the Santa Barbara airport. The valley was unbelievably green, the recent rains turning the grass even greener than the trees.

Earthquake?

(3/10/05) It sounded like an earthquake at 7:07am yesterday morning. An big, old oak tree fell, toppling another, and knocking a heavy branch off a third. The two trees fell against the house, both coming to rest on the eaves outside of Henry's room. Here he watches as the cleanup crew wields chainsaws and a chipper to remove the mess. The tree was healthy, but it was a "leaner" and the ground is so saturated from winter rains that the roots couldn't hold.

Mystery

(3/9/05) After a walk in her stroller, Evelyn gets ready for a nap. What is she thinking about?

Shoreline Grill

(3/7/05) One of our favorite dinner spots is Shoreline Grill, a dive restaurant where you can sit on the sand and order a taco. We went tonight, just before sunset, and watched as Henry made new friend, Zoe.

Afternoon Bike Ride

(3/7/05) I was leaving for a bike ride today, and Henry asked if he could come and ride in his trailer. We rode to where Cold Springs Creek crosses East Mountain Drive. We took off our shoes and socks and ran through the cold water countless times, and then rode home.

Mother and Daughter

(3/6/05)

Must Be A Good Joke...

(3/4/05) Henry can't stop giggling after dinner at MCC with Monte and Gloria.

Camera Candy

(3/3/05) Evelyn is a good sport for an afternoon photo session.

First Solo Trip

(3/3/05) Jill leaves on her first solo trip with both kids. Scary!

Fishin'

(3/1/05) After the playhouse is done, it's time to fish in the creek.

Playhouse Installed

(3/1/05) After weeks of work, Gaga and Henry enjoy the playhouse they've built together.
