First Bottle! (2/27/04) Just shy of her one-month birthday, Evelyn gets her first bottle of mom's milk. She looks at me with a look of "what are YOU doing here," but she has no problems drinking enthusiastically. Henry is equally impressed. He says, "Daddy, why you have no boob?". |

Big Drama (2/19/05) A crew arrived today to replace our power pole, which was installed in 1931 and pecked with thousands of acorn-filled holes by generations of woodpeckers. The guys worked through a very wet day to install a slick new fiberglass pole. |

Brother and Sister (2/18/05) When I go to get Henry from his crib this morning, he wants his "baby sister" to join him. He is happy to lend his pillow and to make her comfortable. He has a lot of curiousity about her and has shown her nothing but affection. |

Visiting Dr. Brewer (2/11/05) Evelyn has a cold, so we take her to Dr. Brewer. He says we can't give her any medicine, so she'll just have to fight it off. The good news is that otherwise she looks great. She has regained her birthweight and unless her cold gets worse she doesn't have to come back until her two month birthday. |

AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am (2/8-9/05) With Evelyn only a few days old, I drive to Pebble Beach after dinner Tuesday with Dale and Pete. We stay in Salinas, rise early on Wednesday, and spend the morning watching pros and celebrities practice for the tournament. We see the tour driving champ up close, see lots of familiar faces and golf swings, watch Huey Lewis chip in at #3 for a big skin, and see Bill Murray stomp around and entertain the crowd. Afterward we drive back to Santa Barbara in time to put our kids to bed. |

Henry at School (2/4/05) |
Blessed Day (2/3/05) A quiet day, with a blessing from our Priest, Anne Howard. It's the day we picked Evelyn's name. It's a name we like, that's also a tribute to two of her great-grandmothers--Eve and Elvi. Her middle name, Rose, is a favorite name of Jill's and was Dale's grandmother's name. It's also a way to remember that Henry calls her "Flower", a name he picked months ago. |

A New Baby! (2/2/05) Flower arrives at 2:36AM, after a very peaceful birth, weighing 8 lbs. 14 oz. and measuring 20". The nurse places her on Jill's chest even before the cord is cut, and leaves her there for a couple of hours so we can be with her. She's hyper-alert and able to pick up her head. Her eyes move to follow our voices. She even smiles! Impossible, but absolutely true! She's perfect. |

| Later, Henry comes to meet her for the first time. He's exited to see that his picture is in her crib, and we let him hold her on his lap, on a pillow. He's excited and curious, touching her gently and asking lots of questions. We mention casually that "she has Henry's nose", and, misundertanding what we mean, reaches out slowly, gets her nose, and puts it back on his face. Earlier that day, at school, the teachers say to him "you have a little sister now, so what does that make you?" "Happy," is the answer. | |
